Question:
I am a MBA student graduating in May 2000. I will also sit for the CPA exam in
2000 as well. Some of my long range plans include teaching accounting/finance
at either an university or community college setting. To help facilitate this,
I am thinking of applying to Indiana U's distance Master of Science in Adult
Education program. My questions are:
1) Would the combination of a MS in Adult Education and a MBA be sufficient to
teach at 4 year colleges w/o graduate programs?
2) Would the MS even be necessary (beyond attempting to achieve a competitive
advantage) for teaching at the CC level?
3) Are there distance DBA or Ph.D. programs that are widely accepted for
aspiring professors?
I visited Touro's distance DBA program site and came away thoroughly
unimpressed. Any thoughts?
Answer:
Very small colleges might consider it. Most are receiving plenty of Ph.D.
level applications, though.
Depends on the school. To give you an idea, though, we (the college where I
work) recently hired a new business instructor. We had 8 applicants with
Ph.D. or similar doctoral degrees (including 2 D.B.A. degrees from distance
programs including Sarrasota and Nova SE). Twenty-five applicants had MBA
degrees with 7 of those holding the CPA as well. We also had a mixture of
BA and BA/CPA level applicants. These were not really considered
considering the depth of field with higher degrees.
On a side note, we are undergoing final preperation for a decenial
accreditation visit from North-Central and one isse we've really been
focusing on is the need for MA/MS and above for CC college faculty.
North-Central has not dictated such a requirement (yet) but it appears they
are really interested in seeing such "practice" in place.
We ended up offering the job to a MBA/CPA, by the way.
As for the MA in Education, I've been told - but haven't really tested the
theory - that this degree is really on worthwhile if your goal is
administration. If you want to teach at the college level then stay with
the MBA/CPA combination and maybe put in the extra hours towards a Ph.D. or
DBA.
My own limited experience (since 1990) on college hiring committees suggests
that there is a "snobbish" attitude by many academics towards those with
non-traditional graduate degrees. The worst are the Ph.D. level faculty who
are so closed minded as to think that the only way to a decent education is
through "on campus" - residency type programs where you serve as a slave to
some high and mighty professor.
In this last round of hiring, though, I did see some acceptance of certain
degrees. For instance, the candidate with the degree from Sarasota was
considered very highly. Two of the committee members (including myself) had
some knowledge of the program and knew what limited residency requirement
there was; i.e., how much was really DL oriented education.
As DL oriented programs continue to grow I think you'll see wider
acceptance.
