Question:
I suffer from dyscalculia, it has held me back for most of my life. Last year, I decided to fight back and miraculously obtained my GED with only one attempt. I passed with flying colors in every area other than math, scraping by with 42 points. But I PASSED, that's all that matters.
just when I thought I was done with testing for a little while, I came face to face with an entrance test for a trade school. It is the Adult Basic Learning Examination, ABLE for short, and I cannot find any straight forward information. In my Internet searches, I've only been able to come up with the same vague description or overly complicated and cryptic reviews.
I do not want to bring my learning disability into the picture if I can avoid it. I am working with a tutor specializing in learning disabilities, but without knowing exactly what the test may or may not cover, we are finding it difficult to prepare.
All I was able to get out of the school was that they require a "total passing score of 70." I tried to press the issue but no further information was offered. Can *anyone* explain to me how this test is scored and what I can expect in the math segment?
Answer:
This is what our brochure at school says:
Number Operations
Concepts of number and computation are measured by a 40-item subtest. In each problem, the examinee chooses a response from among five answer choices. "Not given" (NG) is an answer option for many of the problems in this subtest.
The objectives measured by this subtest include reading and writing numerals; interpreting fractions; factorization; ratio, proportion, and percent; equations; and using zero as an operator. The examinee is also asked to use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals to computer answers to number problems an adult is likely to encounter. The subtest also includes computation using scientific notation, computation with integers, and powers and roots.
