Question:
About a laser computer and modern grant: I attended a Science teacher's conference in Denver Co this past Nov., and one workshop was a demonstration of how one teacher applied this exact technology in his classroom. The presenters name was Joe Figlino from St. Anne's Episcopal School and his demonstration was impressive.
But about the grant which provided the equipment. I am trying to find grants to apply for so that I can set up a similar classroom.
Can anyone give me suggestion???
Answer:
check with schools of education that stress technology. Columbia Teachers College in NY, Harvard's Graduate School of Ecuation, and Stanford all have big technology programs. Even if you can't attend classes there, you may discover people on the faculty who can direct you to a program.
Adult education centers in many communities offer courses that would cover the kinds of things you want to know. They're not focused on education specifically, but if your goal is to understand the technology, that shouldn;t make a big difference. Curriculum integration is another story; for that, you'll either want to find a group of technology-minded teachers (and there are many on the net) or read one of the books that are beginning to come out on the general topic. The Cambrdige Adult Education Center in Cambridge, MA has lots of suitable courses. Do I recall that you're from Rhode Island? During the summer the commute shouldn't be egregious.
Various national groups, such as the National Science Foundation and the supercomputing centers have programs designed for school teachers, all of which seem to include extensive instruction in the use of the technology. Some of the corporate giants, such as IBM and Apple, run programs too. For all of these, though, you have to be part of a project. In some ways this can be the best way to go, as you get technology, curriculum integration and support all at once; and it usually doesn't cost you a thing. SOmetimes they even pay you to attend. Your school district may know abou thtese kinds of things, or get in touch with tho afore-mentioned organizations directly.
