Question:
I'm a volunteer for Pima County Adult Education and there is a rumour circulating around our schools that the INS is going to start searching adult education classes for illegal aliens in April. It has something to do with the new immigration law going into effect.
Does anybody know if there is any real basis for this rumour?
Answer:
There is precedent for this in Los Angeles. The ESL classes in adult schools were long know by INS as locations for large numbers of illegal aliens.
I believe, however, that INS may have exercised discretion in taking advantage of this knowledge, perceiving a possible image problem resulting from a raid. Factories and busstops, however, were not immune to INS raids.
