Adult Education Programs

Question:
I read today that the governor thinks the citizens of Hawaii should pay the cost of transporting athletics from schools in the mainland in order for the University to keep up the sports department.

What happened to education?

Answer:
I recall that one writer wrote that it all amounts to $. Since the UH autonomy bills have passed, decisions like this will probably be based on how much the football games brings to budget from alumni contributions, legislative goodwill, and on a different level how many tourists $ and advertising it generates and the need to use a huge Aloha Stadium for more than just swapmeets or high school games.

It may not be that education will bring in the big bucks to keep the institution healthy. But one would hope that education will still be important. However, I can see where remedial programs may be pushed back to the night scholl adult education programs, and continuing educations will be more tightly associated with business who can afford these high cost classes at the college level.

For eg. support for Visual Basic programming for businesses is the area is not supported because it is an academic subject and part of an academic course program, whereas there is support for Access 97 for continuing. I can see where Visual Basic would go to an adult education program-- which makes more sense from the point of view that object oriented languages like C++ or functional languages are more popular at the college, or academic, setting. But it would be hard for DOE to bring such a class into its curriculum-- even if it is a practical language for businesses.
