Question:
Is there anywhere in Sacramento a woodworking shop that is open for public use (on either free or fee basis)? Maybe at a high school, community college, club, community center, etc?
Are there no woodworking facilities at the other community colleges, then? I have no room for woodworking equipment, so my only hope is some kind of publicly-accessible workshop.
Answer:
So far we know about a wood shop at Sierra College in Rocklin and at the UC Davis Craft Center (which I've visited and seems to be a very well appointed shop). I'm still hoping that someone will know of something right here in Sacto.
Is there a woodworking club? Many high schools have a wood shop, and where I grew up the Adult Education program offered some night classes using their facilities. But the Sac Adult Education bulletin doesn't mention any woodworking classes.
Unfortunately, most high schools have gotten rid of their woodshops because of funding limitations and the liability problems. I think Rio Linda High still has a program, but I'm not personally aware of any others. Its sad that the youth of today don't have the resources we had years ago.
There are three woodworking clubs here in Sacramento; one for woodworking in general, a woodturning club, and a woodcarving club. The woodturning club has a home page:
