Adult Learning And Literacy

Question:
Is anyone using a learning style inventory that they are happy with? Can you show me what and where.

I have to complete my assignments. So i'm very in need these information. Can anyone give me some suggestions or advices???

Answer:
In our Adult Education program we have a variety of learning styles inventories that we use, usually selecting an appropriate one based on the student's literacy level. One that we use extensively is one we have adapted into a more adult-oriented format that was originally developed by the Wichita Public Schools Staff Development Center (3030 South Osage, Wichita, Kansas 67217). I encountered it in a Corrections Education conference workshop on" Adult Learning Styles" presented by Diane Wilson of the Federal Correctional Facility at Danbury, CT, in April,1991, at Waterville, ME. It has been extremely useful with students of all ages, and we have included it in our intake procedure for adult learners, as well as presenting it to all of our Jobs for Maine's Graduates students at the local high school. When I administer it, I usually read it aloud while the student(s) read along, just to be sure that I address both the visual and auditory learners in the group.

Another staff person and I have developed a more simplified version of a learning styles inventory which we use with our non-literate and ESL (English as a Second Language ) students.

I would also highly recommend the book "Help Yourself, How to Take Advantage of Your Learning Styles"by Gail Murphy Sonbuchner, New Readers Press,Syracuse,NY, 1991, ISBN 0-88336-555-3.

We have begun hearing about learning styles work being done that involves a person's Myers-Briggs profile, but have no references on that yet.

All in all, we have found that having a person be aware of his/her learning style has made a positive impact on self-image, understanding, and course of studies. It has also given us, as teachers, greater insight into what kinds of materials, and how to present them, for all of our students.
