Question:
I remember hearing of a period when Bronx was the more selective school than stuy. Is it true???When was this? Can anyone give me some suggestions??? I've search this information on web butfind not much usefully. Anyone help me???
Answer:
What about maybe 5 years before the opening of the current Stuyvesant High School on the North River when new students faced the prospect of four years in the ancient building on East Thirteenth and any non-emergency maintenance would likely be deferred until the old building was being converted to its next use. I believe it's now an adult learning center. The Bronx Science Emery Roth building was, although widely reviled, relatively new.
Also, at that time, there might have been some crime issues around the old Stuyvesant. I know there were some street corner heroin markets maybe 5 or 10 blocks south especially in the lettered avenues. There were crime issues in the Bronx but not particularly in that area
