Question:
I'm looking for recommendations on books for beginning adult students. now, I'm 35 years old and have just begun to learn piano.I want to find some books to practise on my own but there are too manykinds of books at the bookshops so I want to ask advice from you.some of my friends comments " Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course series"for me. WHat do you think???
Answer:
The *PRIMARY* book (there is no one book that *really* does it all) I've used for years has been the Bastien OLDER BEGINNER PIANO COURSE which is fine but show it's age. The Alfred ADULT PIANO COURSE is a bit more versitile than the Bastien and doesn't forget to emphasize bass clef reading.
Many people prefer the Noona adult series stating it is better at teaching reading than the above two books.
IMHO, stay away from the John Thompson books. The approach to teaching reading in those books is terrible. I realise that many people reading this grew up with this series and playing very nicely. But pedagogy has come a long way.
