Question:
I'm looking to get a MS in Mathematics. I went thru the list of distance education schools from the FAQ at http://pages.prodigy.com/PAUM88A/ These two schools seem to be the best choices. Does anyone have any positive or negative experiences with either of these two schools?
Answer:
1. University of Berkeley = Never heard of it. Do you, perhaps, mean the University of California at Berkeley, a regionally accredited school and part of the U.C. system? If you do mean there's a separate "University of Berkeley," it's likely a degree mill.
2. Greenwich University = Degree mill. Bad news.
The UK college is known as the University of Greenwich (as opposed to Greenwich University). Among the programs offered is a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)/Certificate in Education (Cert.Ed) in post compulsory education. The program, which is run as both an on-campus or distance-learning program, is a teaching qualification for teachers in adult/community/further/higher education. It is only open to existing teachers and is not meant as a means of entry into the teaching profession. The PGCE is awarded to graduates and the Cert.Ed. to non-graduates. PGCE candidates must obtain a greater proportion of credits at phase two (equivalent to year two of the two-year part-time program). Holders of the City and Guilds Further and Adult Education Teacher's Certificate are exempt from year one of the program.
Some other colleges do not differentiate between graduate or non-graduate students and only award a Cert.Ed.
