Question:
I propose a new organization, Boston Computer User Groups. While the individual user groups will have get their individual acts in gear, if we are able to maintain links with each other we will not lose the diversity of expertise. If we can get space and a phone, we can provide classes, dial help, and the walk-in services that are so valuable to many. We can also show the public that we're Logging On and that the mission of the BCS continues to share info, solve problems, and enjoy each other.
Several places have volunteered Internet access to help continue the BCS. It may be that many of our associations in this new organization are hypertext links. But let us not forget that there are millions of users who don't know a modem from muffler. These people need instruction, help, and enthusiasm-qualities which we have displayed over and over.
If we can form a credible organization and we may need a lawyer to do this, perhaps we can purchase the software libraries and computers.
Whatever is accomplished should be done in the next week or two. I'd like to know how I fill out my check for membership dues to this new organization. I can give Wednesday eves and can provide some services during the day. How about you?
Answer:
A user group combined with a STRONG educational arm may be more powerful. Examples: Cambridge Adult Learning Center, Bostom Adult Education, etc. etc.
These non-profits are very stong and in my opinion, their cheap pricing of computer education helped make the current BCS stale and missionless.
The BCS always *thoughT* it had no "competition" and acted in that manner, but the truth is its a non profit competitive dog house and a new BCS needs a very strong business office and educational office, with user groups supported from PROFITS of memberships and classes.
