Question:
I had been thinking of training for MT for a while, and just got the Brookline adult education program catalog for spring.
If you've taken the Brookline certificate course, any other certificate courses in the greater Boston MA area, or correspondence courses recently, I'd like to know:
-- what course you took -- whether you would recommend the course -- how long it took you to complete the course -- how large your class load was each semester -- how many hours a week you invested in the course -- whether the school was helpful in placing you in a job -- what you thought about your internship experience -- whether you have or plan to get AAMT certification, and whether you think AAMT certification made or will make much difference in getting a job in the Boston market.
Answer:
You are wasting your money on that so-called program Brookline Adult Education has. Write to me privately and I will be happy to discuss it with you. Don't worry about AAMT certification until you have both education and experience.
Usually great transcriptionists are not trained educators and do not have Master's degrees. They are great transcriptionists. If a program has the luck to have a great transcriptionist who can also teach, that is marvelous. Also, many ART's, RRA's and R.N.'s have the right credentials and no knowledge of MT. And they are teaching. Another reason is time constraints. 40 contact hours does not allow the teaching of much of anything and often the students have no computers at home. The best programs are 1-2 years and often in the area of community colleges.
