Question:
I'm a complete newcomer to this group, but I'm here in advance of my 2002 New Year's resolution, which is to do something about my dreams of pursuing writing, even as a hobby. I have searched this group's archives with limited success in locating the particular information I am seeking so I'll just post my questions:
(1) Has anyone here taken any "continuing ed" type classes in the Boston or Cambridge area that relate to writing, especially getting started (I work by day, so classes would have to be at night or on the weekend)? Classes I'm considering are offered by the following local schools/groups, and replies describing any experience with these organizations is appreciated:
Boston Center for Adult Education Grub Street Writers Inc. Cambridge Center for Adult Education Harvard Extension School
(2) Any to avoid? (3) Any that are worth the time? (4) Any good ones that I've missed (e.g., should I look into a college class?) (5) Should I just forget about classes and simply start writing?
I am not seeking a class in basics such as grammar. I am not seeking a degree-type program. Hopefully, I have enough serious schooling (BSEE, MSEE--yes, I know, but I got all A's in my non-engineering classes like writing and literature--as well as JD). By trade, I am a patent attorney, which requires me to write a lot of legal documents, licenses, patent applications, and the like.
Something in me just wants to write more creatively, though I don't necessarily want to write fiction. I harbor no dreams of creating the Great American Novel or even the Pretty Good American Novel. My fantasies seem to be more about writing a non-fiction piece that could appear in a publication such as the New Yorker. I am in love with books, words, and the idea of writing editorials, commentary, interviews, real-life stories, that sort of thing. Haven't got the imagination for poetry, short stories, or novels--yet.
Answer:
Classes are fun, but you do not need to go to school to learn how to write. There are plenty of books in your local library that will teach you. Just grab one and start reading. Also, read books in the category of book you are interested in writing. Read the GOOD ones, and pay attention to how the different effects are achieved
