Question:
I am looking for an alternative BA program, simular to Vermont CollegeADP program in or near Virginia.Anyone has infomation could tell me ?
Answer:
Mary Baldwin College in Staunton [pronounced "Stan'ton"] has an outstandingAdult Degree Program similar to the V.C. model (in fact, it appears to beeven more flexible than V.C.'s ADP in terms of lower residency andassessment of prior learning). They have regional offices inCharlottesville, Richmond, Roanoke, and Wyers Cave; their main numberis (800) 822-2460 or, locally, (540) 887-7003. They have severalmajors available, are regionally accredited by SACS and, as a privateliberal arts college, are competitive in cost to V.C.
[Background note: Before I enrolled in Thomas Edison State College for myown B.A., Mary Baldwin was one of the schools I checked into closely, attending an orientation meeting at their Richmond center. I was *very*impressed with the program and the methodologies used. Why didn't Ienroll in Mary Baldwin? Because it is an historically women's college, still single-sex in the traditional programs although the ADP is open tomen. However, *only* male students are required to take a course inwomen's studies; this requirement does not apply to female students. MaryBaldwin has a great program, but blatantly sexist requirments suck eggs,no matter what the flavor. Since I visited them in 1984, I don't know ifthey still have the requirement; it would certainly be interesting tofind out. Readers not otherwise familiar with the school may recognizeits name because Mary Baldwin's main campus in Staunton was the proposedsite for a women's counterpart to the then-all-male programs atVirginia Military Institute.
